John Stubbings Speaker Details

We attend many shows and fairs each year exhibiting and selling orchids suitable for the south. John also gives lectures or presentations throughout the world to various orchid and botanical or garden groups. These talks are either about growing orchids more effectively or about groups of plants.

Currently nine talks are ready to present, most using computer projection. If any additional subjects are wanted please contact us.

Current topics and length, all with digital projector in PowerPoint except number 8, any talk can be shortened or lengthened if needed, all include question and answer periods:

  1. Phalaenopsis: "Development of White with Red Lip Phalaenopsis" includes the species used, old and new hybrids, also includes photographs from the 2006 Taiwan International Orchid Show. These photos can be added to any talk if requested. About 60 minutes.
  2. Phalaenopsis: "New Directions in Multifloral Phalaenopsis" includes species used, old and new hybrids, plant class entry for shows, and related photographs from lecture 10 below. About 60 minutes.
  3. Orchid Growing: "Secrets of Success with Orchids" is a beginners lecture emphasizing the basics of orchid growing. About 40 minutes.
  4. Orchid Growing: "Growing Orchids to their Potential" is more an intermediate level lecture with more detail than the previous. About 60 minutes.
  5. Cattleyas: "Cattleya Orchid Care" includes where the species come from, species photos and general growing recommendations for Cattleya, Laelia, Encyclia, Epidendrum and related genera and hybrids. About 50 minutes.
  6. Oncidiums: “Oncidium Orchid Care” includes a review of common species and the wide range of Intergeneric hybrids. Growing instructions included in a talk that lasts about 50 minutes.
  7. Other: "Unusual Relatives of Cymbidiums" includes Galeandra, Catasetum, Clowesia, Cycnoches, Mormodes species and hybrids. Photos and emphasis on culture. Somewhat more humor than the others. About 60 minutes.
  8. Orchids: "An introduction to Orchids" is a basic introduction intended for garden clubs. A hands on discussion, no computer, no slides. Includes a handout and is based on live plants brought to the talk. About 30 minutes, longer if desired.
  9. Laelias: "Laelia Orchid Care" includes where the species come from, changes in names, species photos and general growing recommendations for Cattleya, Laelia, Encyclia, Epidendrum and related genera and hybrids. About 50 minutes.
  10. "Four Premier Orchid Shows in the Far East" includes photographs and discussions about the 2006 Taiwan International Orchid Show, the 2007 Japan Grand Prix, the 2007 Taiwan International Orchid Show and the 9th Asia Pacific Orchid Conference in Goyang Korea - 2007. About 50 minutes.

Generally we bring sale plants consisting of unusual species and hybrids. Costs to the society are travel expenses only if there are sales. We encourage groups to preorder species and hybrids from the website catalog. Preorders save you money. We discount 10% for preorders to lectures or shows. We bring our own computer and projector.

Without sales costs are travel plus $150, although this is negotiable for smaller or local groups.

John's biography is as follows:

John Stubbings is a retired chemical/environmental engineer formerly working in specialty chemical plants. His last job in that field was to work near Bombay, India for a local Indian firm. That assignment lasted 16 months. Clown Alley Orchids is the family business started in 1986 near Chicago. In September 2005 he re-opened the orchid business with a full time retail shop in Pasadena, Texas where the greenhouse space is much larger. John is the chief grower and hybridizer. Clown Alley Orchids attends many shows and fairs each year exhibiting and selling orchids suitable for the south.

John has been growing orchids starting indoors under lights and in windowsills in 1979. He built his first lean-to greenhouse in 1986 and then a larger freestanding greenhouse in 1996. John concentrates his orchid hybridizing work in Cattleyas, Phalaenopsis and Galeandra. John has registered over 15 Galeandra hybrids and 30 Phalaenopsis hybrids and two Cattleya hybrids.

He is currently President of The International Phalaenopsis Alliance with members from about twenty countries and nearly every state. Previously he was Regional Director and First Vice-President with the IPA.

John is a fully accredited American Orchid Society (AOS) judge (since 1991) John has served as Vice-Chair of the AOS Houston Judging Center. He has attended and judged shows all over the US and international shows in Canada, Scotland, Taiwan and Korea. He previously served as Vice-Chair, then for five years as Chairman of the AOS Chicago Judging Center. John was President of the Illinois Orchid Society for three years.  He was a director or officer of the Illinois Orchid Society for over 20 consecutive years. He is Second Vice-President of the Houston Orchid Society for 2008. John has won many AOS awards for flower quality as well as cultural excellence.

John gives lectures or presentations throughout the world to various orchid and botanical or garden groups. This includes courses given for the Chicago Botanic Garden and lectures at SWROGA meetings. These talks are usually about growing orchids more effectively or about Phalaenopsis or other orchid genera. In 2005 he gave lectures on the North Carolina tour of four orchid societies, the Galveston Orchid Society, and at the SWROGA meeting in N. Littlerock, AR. In 2006 he was invited to lecture at the 2006 Taiwan International Orchid Symposium in Taiwan, R. O. C. and spent over a week in Taiwan visiting nurseries. He also lectured in Edmonton and Calgary, Canada. In the US in 2006 and 2007 he lectured at the New Orleans O. S., Alamo O.S. in San Antonio, Houston Orchid Society, Tip Of Texas O.S. in Weslaco, the Houston AOS Judging Center, Fort Worth, TX Orchid Society, Tulsa, OK O. S., Memphis O. S., Hill Country O. S. in  New Braunfels, TX.,  Shreveport O.S. and South Texas O.S. in Corpus Christi. All can be used as references.  John's current speaking schedule can be found at News.
